How to stop 8 displaying as an emoticon in WordPress

This was an annoying little problem the first time I came across it and it took me a while to find the cause. It was one of those silly things that just shouldn’t be happening and yet it was, and I didn’t know how to fix it.

But once again the answer is very simple – you just have to know where to look.

How to stop 8 displaying as an emoticon in WordPress

I like to write lists, and I often use a number and not a bullet point, yet, when I used the number 8, an emoticon with sunglasses would be displayed instead. Not exactly what I was looking for.

Look for the Settings sub menu and expand, choose Writing. On the screen that appears look at the second line – Formatting. The box next to Convert emoticons like :-) and :-P to graphics on display should be ticked.

This is the culprit – untick the box, save the changes and the emoticons will disappear.
